Meet the Children

Following are typical biographies of some of our children, as told by the teachers, which give an appreciation of the circumstances they experience. We prefer not to give names and photographs which we feel would be an invasion of privacy.

8 yr old girl
“She has two brothers and two sisters. Her father has very little land and cannot grow food. Her mother works in the fields to make money. Sometimes her father beats her mother. She is a shy girl. Her parents do not take good care of her, and don’t look after her uniform and hair or keep her clean. Her mind is not open, she is hesitant and tense. She needs more love because her home environment is not good.”
10 yr old boy
“He is very poor. He has five brothers and one sister. His father has two wives but his income is very low. He has a small grains shop. He is often sick and the school looks after his medical and nutrition needs. Both mothers always quarrel with each other so his home is not peaceful and his father drinks wine most days.”
11 yr old boy
“His family is very poor. His father is not at home and his mother doesn’t work so they live with his grandfather who is also very poor. He has two brothers and two sisters. He does not eat regularly and his health is not good which makes if hard for him to study.”
12 yr old boy
“He has two sisters and one brother and lives at Bhagalpur with his maternal uncle. His father is very poor and cannot support him. Sometimes he goes to bed hungry and he is suffering from nutritional deficiency that has affected his sight. Despite his problems he is a good student.”
12 yr old girl
“She is like an orphan. Her mother is a widow. She has three brothers and two sisters. Her Uncle looks after the family but they do not have a good income because they have no land, just a small roadside tea-shop. The school also takes care of her brother.”
16 yr old girl
“She is an orphan and lives with her grandmother who is very poor and really too old to help. One of her older brothers was murdered last year. She still has one other married brother but he does not take much interest. In 2001 she was diagnosed with TB, however she is now recovered and is a good student who we consider one of our success stories".
